LAGOS – Apparently disturbed by the spread of hate speech in our society, University Don, Prof Ralph Akinfeleye Friday, charged members of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers GOCOP, to help reverse the trend.
He spoke during the second annual conference of the GOCOP, held at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja Lagos.
Akinfeleye, says online publishers owe the society a duty as trained journalists to halt the trend of fake news and hate speeches on the road to 2019 general elections.
The theme of the #GOCOPConference2018 is: “Online Publishers Role Towards A Sustainable Economy, Credible Election And Security In Nigeria.”
According to Akinfeleye, “As we approach 2019 general elections I want to appeal that you help us stop and checkmate the spread of fake news.
“You are responsible journalists and not citizen journalists who practice journalese. As Online Publishers you must constantly campaign against fake news.
“Always separate yourselves from bloggers, because you are trained journalists. The society looks up to you for direction and accurate news at all times.”
The 2018 GOCOP conference was chaired by former Governor of Ogun state, Segun Osoba, represented by Mr Lanre Idowu, while a former Managing Director of Daily Times and veteran columnist, Tola Adeniyi, co-chaired the well-attended conference.
